From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein Document Release is Divided.

Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric

Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.

“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.

Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure

But, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.

The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.

But a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to launch the offensive.

“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Clinton Campaign Releases Response

Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.

Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued

However, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.

Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
