Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
