Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
